Children Of Bodom frontman Alexi Laiho ranks his band’s records from least favourite to most loved

Over two decades and billions of notes shredded, Children Of Bodom have carved out quite a legacy in popularising melodic death metal that cuts like an Arctic wind. With their tenth album Hexed due on March 8, we thought what better way to celebrate the milestone than by forcing their wild child leader Alexi Laiho to ruthlessly rate their catalogue in order?

We suppose a cake and some balloons would also have done the job, but that wouldn’t have been half as fun as watching Alexi squirm, now would it?

10. Relentless Reckless Forever (2011)

This is pretty fucking brutal, I tell you, because it’s like I’ve got to pick my least favourite kid. But I’m sure everyone secretly has one so I’ll go with this. I actually listened to it recently and there’s a couple of cool tracks, but the rest of them don’t make any fucking sense. Just a whole lot of riffs at high speed that don’t make up a song. At the time it seemed like doing something different was the right thing to do, but maybe that change was too thought out.”

9. Something Wild (1997)

Even though in our minds it’s a classic, let’s face it, it’s fucking stupid. There’s Deadnight Warrior and Lake Bodom which were actually good songs, but other than that it’s a series of great riffs with me screaming obscenities on top of it. But that’s kind of cool because it’s real. We were only 17 and 18 at that point and we saved up money from our daytime jobs doing random shit to record the album. Nothing was planned. I love the anger and the energy, but if I have to pick from all my children then this one isn’t the best.”

8. Halo Of Blood (2013)

That was the first time we noticed there was a problem with Roope [Latvala, guitarist]. I’m not going to say what the problem was, but he wouldn’t show up for practice and let’s just say he didn’t share the same work ethic. With Halo Of Blood I wish we had maybe an extra six months. I think it was done in a rush because there are a lot of good guitar lines all over the place, but good songs? Not so much. Somehow it got a lot of attention as Children Of Bodom go back to their roots.’ Again. I wish I knew what these roots are because we seem to be going back there a lot!”

7. Blooddrunk (2007)

How many fucking records do we have? This one isn’t bad, but it’s not the best. It was the first time Peter Tägtgren from Hypocrisy recorded and produced my vocals and he taught me a lot of tricks that I use today. I wanted to improve as a singer and Peter is the most fucking badass death metal singer ever, and he knows about recording, so I asked him and he was like, Hell yeah dude, let’s do it.’ That was a huge fucking moment for me.”

6. Are You Dead Yet? (2005)

It was another step up and musically it was a little more diverse. I think the record sounds great and it was a good time on every level: we had so much fun in the band and we were touring non-stop. We were in our early twenties and we didn’t give a fuck; we would go anywhere. We started to make a little bit of money and that was the first album where I started to get all this hate, like you guys sold out,’ and all that shit. However, that record sold more than any other COB album so yeah, if we sold out then I’m fucking happy about it!”

5. Follow The Reaper (2000)

I can say the same thing between Hatebreeder and Follow The Reaper. The band grew a lot and just got better and better and more and more attention from everywhere. We got to play in Japan, which was unreal for us and then we started to hear rumours that people in America dug this shit. It was so fucking insane we couldn’t believe it, because this all happened between 1997 and 2000, so we’re talking about three years. But then we also made three albums, so we just wouldn’t stop. I was also doing Sinergy on the side but I just didn’t care, dude. I wanted to be something.”

4. Hatebreeder (1999)

Hatebreeder was a massive leap from Something Wild on so many levels. Between those albums we did two full European tours opening up for Hypocrisy, who were one of our favourite bands. There was no denying them. Doing these festivals and tours we got to see how bands acted on and offstage. We were clueless fucking kids from the North Pole who hadn’t seen anything from anywhere. But we were full-on and we were ready to kick everyone and anybody in the face. We wanted to fucking kill everybody. That was the Hatebreeder mentality.”

3. I Worship Chaos (2015)

Children Of Bodom Rar

I know a lot of people supposedly didn’t like it, but it’s one of my favourites and I’m really fucking proud of that record. We had just lost our guitar player [Roope Latvala] the day after recording started, and I was adamant and determined that we were going to get everything done on time. My work ethic is very important to me and I feel like the worst piece of shit in the world if I blow a deadline. I just got busy concentrating on remembering what his parts were, so I need to compliment myself on doing a great fucking job of recording all the guitars.”

2. Hexed (2019)

I loved recording and writing this new record and I love the way it sounds. It was also when I realised that Children Of Bodom is definitely a five-piece. Daniel [Freyberg] plays guitar with a different touch than I do and you can definitely tell when you put your headphones on that there’s two different dudes playing – it makes it more alive. As proud as I am of I Worship Chaos, having everything in sync and me playing all the guitars doesn’t necessarily serve our band. Children Of Bodom has always been a little more rock n’ roll than that.”

1. Hate Crew Deathroll (2003)

That’s the album that fucking broke everything for us: the shows got bigger, festivals got bigger, and we sold a lot of records. I could have never imagined being on MTV Headbanger’s Ball. Me and my sister grew up watching [presenter] Vanessa Warwick, so for us Headbanger’s Ball wasn’t just a TV show, it was a fucking event. We always had to watch it in secret, too, because it would be on at 11:30pm and we had to be in bed. But we got permission to tape it so one of us could be up to press record on the VHS. Of course, me and my sister would plot out a way to get the other downstairs to watch and it was the best shit ever. It just goes to show that there were probably kids out there doing exactly what me and my sister did and seeing Children Of Bodom on Headbanger’s Ball, which is pretty fucking cool.”

More about this band..
Something Wild 1997
Something Wild is the debut album by the Finnish melodic death metal band Children of Bodom, released in 1997.
The album presents a darker and generally more experimental sound than the one present in their later albums, and contributed most to the infamous genre controversy of their classification as a death metal or black metal band at the time (in an interview, Darkthrone's Fenriz was asked on what he felt about 'so-called black metal bands like Cradle of Filth and Children of Bodom, to which Fenriz replied that he 'hadn't heard CoB', and that he had 'no comment' about Cradle of Filth). It was held in high praise amongst metal fans in the Finnish underground metal scene at the time, topping charts all over the country, and sparking their international fame everywhere in the underground metal scene as 'That metal band from Finland.'[citation needed] The song-writing in this album is much more free-flowing and the use of keyboards and strong neo-classical metal influences are much more prevalent than in future releases such as Hatebreeder or Follow the Reaper, mixed in with elements of melodic death metal, black metal, and extreme power metal. The 'Deluxe Edition' was released much later in 2002 and includes bonus material.

Hatebreeder 1999
Hatebreeder is the second album from the Finnish metal band Children of Bodom. In it, the band explores a classically influenced sound. It also carries some influence from power metal, in the fast riffs and complex soloing style. This record contains concert favorites such as 'Silent Night, Bodom Night' and 'Downfall'. The keyboards show more presence on this album, with longer and more elaborate solos than in their previous work. The 'Deluxe Edition' was released in 2005 with bonus material.

Hate Crew Deathroll 2003
Hate Crew Deathroll is the fourth studio album by Finnish melodic death metal band Children of Bodom, released in 2003 under the Century Media label. This is the last album featuring guitarist Alexander Kuoppala. It was successful both in Europe and the USA, after the appearance of the 'Needled 24/7' music video on MTV2's Headbanger's Ball. 'Needled 24/7' also featured on the heavy metal documentary Metal: A Headbanger's Journey.
This showed the band's sound becoming more streamlined and a bit simpler, more power metal and classic metal oriented than on previous albums. The keyboards were a bit more toned down as the guitars took hold as the more predominant instrument.
The tracks 'Sixpounder' and 'Angels Don't Kill' are played in drop C (CGCFAD) tuning, which has the 6th (C) string tuned a step lower than the band's usual step-down tuning.
The song 'Hate Crew Deathroll' is only 3:33, but the track lasts 6:38 altogether. It sounds like it's just silence after the song ends, but if the volume is turned up high, you can hear the band members fooling around in the studio.
The band shot a video for 'Needled 24/7', but it ended up being very expensive and did not turn out how the way they wanted it to. To make up for it, they shot the video for 'Sixpounder'. This video has an edited version, in which the blood looks less realistic, and the license plate at the beginning just says 'COB 6 6'. At the end of Needled 24/7 there is a quote: Death? What do yall know about death? taken from the movie Platoon. The lyrics of Sixpounder are about sixpounder cannons.
'You're Better Off Dead' was the only single from the CD. The single also contained a cover of the Ramones' 'Somebody Put Something in my Drink'.
'Bodom Beach Terror' includes a quote heard in the movie American Psycho. My pain is constant and sharp and I do not hope for a better world for anyone, in fact I want my pain to be inflicted on others. The quote can be heard at the end of the song. The quote continues into the beginning of the next track, 'Angels Don't Kill', with 'I want no one to escape.'
The booklet contains the lyrics for 'Needled 24/7', 'Chokehold (Cocked 'n' Loaded)', 'You're Better Off Dead' and 'Hate Crew Deathroll', thus leaving the rest of the albums lyrics up to the listener to take their own meaning from. Alternatively, the lyrics are listed on many music lyric sites.

Are You Dead Yet? 2005
Are You Dead Yet? is the fifth album by the Finnish melodic death metal band Children of Bodom. It was released in Finland on September 14, 2005 and internationally on September 19, 2005 under the Century Media label. It is the first Children of Bodom album to feature guitarist Roope Latvala (Stone, Sinergy, ex-Waltari), due to the departure of Alexander Kuoppala. In this album, the band has chosen the dropped C tuning (typical drop D tuned down a whole step), which differs from the 'whole step down' tuning previously employed. The power metal influences previously prominent are also greatly reduced in this album.

Blooddrunk
2008 single
Blooddrunk is the sixth studio album by Finnishmetal band Children of Bodom. The album contains nine original songs, including a re-recorded version of 'Tie My Rope'. Various editions will feature one or two cover songs as bonus tracks.

Alexi Laiho has stated he has been feeling very aggressive while writing the songs, and that they will be faster and 'thrashier' than the songs displayed on their latest release, Are You Dead Yet?. He notified fans, however, that certain parts of the album will be more progressive.[1] The lyrics will cover similar territory as previous releases.

The first single was the title track, which was released in Finland on February 27, and features the cover song 'Lookin' Out My Back Door' as a b-side. The videos for 'Blooddrunk' and 'Hellhounds on My Trail' were shot in Berlin, Germany in December 2007.

Tokyo Warhearts [Live] 1999
Tokyo Warhearts is a live album by the Finnish melodic death metal band Children of Bodom which was recorded on the year of 1999, when the band only had two albums released. It was recorded and filmed on July 10 and 11th of 1999. The band and their record label, Spinefarm Records, had plans to release the show as a DVD along with the CD, but they reached the conclusion that there were some mismatches between the video and the audio, as there was video footage from two different shows.
Two of the songs from this album have been released separately for promotional purposes and can be found on a Spinefarm DVD compilation: Silent Night, Bodom Night and Deadnight Warrior.
Track 1 covers a segment of Jan Hammer's 'Crockett's Theme' from the Miami Vice soundtrack.
The intro for track 9 is a strain of music called 'Hummel Gets the Rockets' which was composed by Hans Zimmer and Nick Glennie-Smith for the 1996 film The Rock.
